Connect EveryPenny to ChatGPT
Add EveryPenny to ChatGPT as a plugin, then ask about your spending, budgets and plans — or let ChatGPT tidy up transactions if you allow it.
Before you start
- You connect your account in the ChatGPT desktop app — on chatgpt.com the plugin's page sends you there.
- Plugins from your own MCP server need developer mode: in ChatGPT open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode.
- Not every ChatGPT plan includes developer mode. On Business and Enterprise an admin may have to allow custom plugins.
Add the plugin
- Open chatgpt.com/plugins and press +.
- Name it EveryPenny, paste the server address below as the MCP server URL and, if ChatGPT asks, choose OAuth. Create it.
- Open your personal plugins (chatgpt.com/plugins?view=personal), open EveryPenny and press + to install it.

- In the ChatGPT desktop app, open the MCPs tab (next to Plugins, Apps and Skills). Under “From plugins”, find every-penny and press Authenticate.
- Your browser opens EveryPenny's page with a QR code. Scan it with your iPhone camera (or in EveryPenny: Settings → AI assistants → Enter a code).
- EveryPenny shows the request as coming from Codex — that's the part of the ChatGPT desktop app that connects to MCP servers. Choose Read only or Read & write and tap Allow.
- Back in ChatGPT, press Try now on the EveryPenny plugin, or start a new chat, type @ and pick EveryPenny. Ask something, for example “What did I spend this month?”.
If ChatGPT won't use the tools
- every-penny still shows Authenticate? Press it again and approve the new request in the app — each request expires after 10 minutes.
- Chose Read only and asked for a change? In the app go to Settings → AI assistants → Disconnect, then press Authenticate again and choose Read & write.
- ChatGPT can say it changed something without actually calling a tool. Check the change in the app.
Disconnect
In ChatGPT: uninstall the EveryPenny plugin. Or in the app: Settings → AI assistants → Disconnect — ChatGPT loses access immediately.
Permissions
Read only
The assistant can see your accounts, transactions, budgets and reports but can't change anything. A good default for questions.
Read & write
The assistant can also change everything you can change by hand in the app — transactions, accounts, categories, labels, budgets, goals and recurring payments — when you ask it to. What your bank reports stays as the bank reported it.

What it can read
- Overview — net worth, this month's spending and income, budgets that need attention, bills coming up
- Transactions — search by text, dates, category, account, label or amount; full details with receipt lines and splits
- Reports — spending or income by category, label or merchant for any period, converted to one currency
- Monthly cash flow — income, spending and savings rate
- Accounts and balances, categories, labels, budgets, subscriptions and bills, goals, exchange rates
What it can change (Read & write only)
- Add, edit or delete cash and other manual transactions
- Rename, recategorize, relabel, split or hide any transaction — bank transactions keep the amount and date the bank reported
- Categorize, label, hide or delete up to 200 transactions at once
- Record transfers between your manual accounts
- Add, rename, hide or delete accounts; set a manual account's balance — a bank account's balance comes from the bank
- Create, rename and delete your own categories; hide built-in ones you don't use
- Create, rename and delete labels; set and delete budgets
- Create, edit and delete goals
- Add, edit, mark paid or stop tracking subscriptions and bills; confirm or dismiss the ones EveryPenny found
- Change the day your month starts
What it can't do
- Move money. EveryPenny is your ledger — banks are read-only sources.
- See your bank logins, or connect and disconnect banks.
- See anyone else's data. Every request is limited to your own account.
- Read your conversations with the assistant.
Privacy
The assistant only receives what it asks for to answer you, from your account. We don't store your conversations. What the assistant does with your data is covered by its own privacy policy.

- How much did I spend on food last month, and where?
- Can I afford a 3,000 € holiday in July at my current savings rate?
- Label everything from my Lisbon trip, 1–10 April, as “Lisbon”.
- Which subscriptions could I cancel?
